Up to 100 Taiwanese fishing boats, escorted by 10 Coast Guard
Administration ships, embarked on a protest voyage yesterday toward the
Diaoyutai Islands (釣魚台) that organizers said was aimed at asserting
local fishermen’s rights to operate in what they described as their
“traditional fishing grounds.”
If officers on Japanese maritime
defense vessels — which usually intercept Taiwanese fishing boats
operating in the area — try to board the Taiwanese fishing boats,
special service agents traveling on the coast guard vessels will “board
our fishing boats to stop” the Japanese from boarding the Taiwanese
ships, Coast Guard Administration (CGA) Minister Wang Jinn-wang (王進旺)
said.
If the Japanese ships spray water at the Taiwanese fishing boats, Wang said, “we will spray water back at them.”
He added that he would not rule out the use of arms if “the other side resorts to it first.”
The
coast guard official’s statements in the legislature showed Taiwan’s
decision to protect local fishermen’s rights to fish in the waters
around the disputed island chain, which is currently controlled by
Japan, but also claimed by Taiwan and China.
Wang told lawmakers
that Taiwan’s fishing boats would sail to waters to the southwest of the
islands and that there was little likelihood they would meet a group of
Chinese fishing boats also making a protest journey to the area.
More
than 70 fishing boats departed from Nanfangao (南方澳) port in Yilan
County for the island chain that lies 120 nautical miles (220km)
northeast of Taipei.
By the time they arrive in the target area at
5am today, they are set to be joined by other Taiwanese fishing boats
to form a 100-strong flotilla in the “biggest-ever action” to
demonstrate Taiwan’s sovereignty over the islands, Wang said.
Ten coast guard vessels ranging in size from 100 tonnes to 2,000
tonnes are ready to “intervene” in case Japanese ships attempt to block
the Taiwanese fishing boats, he said.
Wang said Taiwan would not
partner with China in protecting its fishing rights near the Diaoyutais,
adding that the CGA would abide by the precepts of “no provocation, no
conflict and no evasion.”
The Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT)
caucus said it supported a legislative committee proposal for
legislators to board coast guard vessels for an inspection tour of the
island group, a move that is also to serve to assert Taiwan’s
sovereignty claim.
However, Democratic Progressive Party caucus
whip Pan Men-an (潘孟安) advised against such a move, saying that it is not
in Taiwan’s interests to highlight its claim at a time when China is
doing all it can to assert its sovereignty over the islands.
Pan said that over the past 40 years, China has never made any pitched claim over the Diaoyutais.
“It is doing so only to divert attention from its internal crisis,” he said, urging Taiwan not to get involved.
Minister
of National Defense Kao Hua-chu (高華柱) said the military had response
measures in place for contingencies that could arise from the visit by
the fishing boats.
The military is to step up air patrols over the
Diaoyutais and monitor the waters surrounding the islands, Kao told the
Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee.
The coast guard
will be responsible for escorting the fishing vessels during the visit,
while the military is to provide related support, Kao said.
“The ministry has completed preparations for any response measures,” Kao
said, adding that senior officials would be stationed at a command
center in Taipei.

New sex films put online amid Justin Lee scandal
Taipei prosecutors yesterday attempted to identify the person responsible for posting more sexually explicit photographs and videos on the Internet allegedly taken by Justin Lee (李宗瑞), who has been accused of committing a string of sexual crimes.
More sex videos were posted on adult film Web sites on Saturday, which were free to download.
According to media reports, one video shows Lee having sex with two women and two other videos show Lee engaging in sexual acts with different women despite their attempts to resist his advances.
Police and investigators reportedly found many explicit videos involving more than 40 women on a computer seized at Lee’s home.
Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office spokesman Huang Mo-hsin (黃謀信) said prosecutors yesterday held a meeting with the Criminal Police Bureau and Taipei City Police Department’s computer crime investigation division in an attempt to identify who was distributing the online films and to stop them.
Huang said the maximum penalty for distributing sexual materials was a two-year jail term, while violations of offenses against privacy could result in a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment.
Lee, who was accused of allegedly drugging and raping several women including several celebrities and filming the acts, turned himself in to prosecutors on Thursday evening after spending more than three weeks on the run. He was taken into custody following a hearing at Taipei District Court.
Some of the photographs and videos, believed to be stills taken from the videos, were found posted on the Internet shortly after Lee went on the run.
During the district court hearing, 27-year-old Justin Lee denied the accusations made against him, saying his sexual activities had all been consensual and that he did not secretly film the acts or circulate any photographs or videos of him engaging in sexual acts with women.

Maybe we are "Friend"
Taiwanese don't like Korean, Korean don't like Taiwanese either. They are adversary relationship that everyone knows. But exactly, they are limited adversary relationship. It means they have a little possibility to become friend.
In the economic condition, Taiwan was front-runner before. But after 2004, Korea was far ahead. Their competition including Semiconductor, Computer and Peripheral Equipment, Optoelectronic, Communications and Internet, Electronic Parts and so on. Korea's Samsung and LG had been the dominant role of the world. Korea's government was successful to help they're electronics industry.
"You will beat Taiwan's electronics industry if you buy a Samsung's cell phone.'' somebody said. Maybe that's true. But from another angle, if Taiwan and Korea that the world two famous electronics industries countries were partnership, their profit will be very prodigious.
One would be only too glad to do it?
In fact,Taiwan and Korea was friend on the history.1919, Taiwan and Korea got together to defend Japan's attacking. 1948/8/15, Korea established a state,Taiwan was the first country to give Korea support.
But every thing changed. 1992, Korea announced that Korea established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China. Korea banished Taiwan's diplomats and gave China Taiwan's diplomatic office. Finally, Taiwan and Korea broke off diplomatic relations, and became limited adversary relationship. They always argue on internet about any sport games or the great history persons which county belong to. As a matter of fact, all of us respect Confucius and his opinions, that's most important thing. It's nothing and no need to argue about which country hi belong to.
Korea government not only successful to help they're electronics industry, but also their entertainment. K-Pop had been the world popular music, of course Taiwan. But some people are assailing about plastic surgery. But we should admire those star's interior and extraordinarily talented instead of paying too much attention on the exterior. Because they should put a lot of efforts to get a little chance to stand on the stage. We should give them more applause not more criticisms.
Either of them can solve the problem. We just put the inimical hearts down, and give each other more respects. Then everyone could be friends. I think every country has its own culture. We should admire and respect every culture in order to understand them. We should not try to understand them on a prejudiced level. When we are studying other people’s culture, we may discover many unexpected but interesting things! We no need to love one country, but never try to hate it.
Remember, when you respect someone, and he will respect you, too.

Jeremy Lin meets his fans in Taiwan
Linsanity swept Taiwan as Jeremy Lin , the first NBA player of
Taiwanese descent, arrived in Taiwan earlier yesterday, marking his
first visit since his meteoric rise with the New York Knicks earlier
this year.
Holding handmade heart-shaped signs with messages like “Jeremy Lin, Welcome” and “I Love Jeremy Lin,” some in the shape of basketball player’s jersey or teddy bears, Lin’s fans gathered at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport earlier yesterday morning, waiting to give him a hearty welcome.
Some of the fans sang out their admiration for Lin by changing lyrics of the song You Are My Sunshine to “You are my hero, my only hero. When I think of you, I couldn’t sleep.”
Fans waiting at the terminal had their smiles briefly turned upside down as a special arrangement had been made for Lin to leave the airport by another route.
However, they cheered up after receiving a short video message recorded by Lin saying: “Thanks for visiting me at the airport, sorry I couldn’t see you guys … but I’ll see you guys tonight. Thanks for coming again.”
Heading straight to the hotel for a short rest, Lin’s itinerary for the daytime was kept secret until he tweeted at about 3:50pm, saying: “thanks TAIWAN for the heartwarming welcome … I’m so glad to be back!! See you at the night market??” with a photograph of himself holding a cake made into his image sitting on his lucky couch.
More than a thousand fans, some waving placards reading “Linsanity” and “Can you sign my jersey?” thronged Ximending in Taipei last night, where Lin met with local fans at an event organized by his sponsors.
“Hello everyone, thank you for coming here to see me,” Lin, who recently signed a three-year, US$25 million contract to play for the Houston Rockets, said to the crowd in Chinese with a big smile, adding: “I love the energy here in Taiwan.”
Lin later responded to a wish list presented by six children from the Eden Social Welfare Foundation, including demonstrating his “secret handshake” to a little boy, lifting another boy up into the air when he asked for a big hug and signing basketballs for each of them as a gift.
Lin later arrived at a street hoops gala, where an even larger crowd had already packed the area, waiting to see him demonstrate his skills on the basketball court.
Lin personally instructed 16 lucky basketball players from the audience on how to improve their dribbling, crossover, lay-up and shooting, by carefully correcting their postures and teaching them his own techniques.
According to flight attendants on Lin’s flight from San Francisco to Taipei yesterday, Lin’s basketball skills have made him a star, but it is his personality and charisma that capture people’s hearts.
During the 12-hour flight, Lin was very amiable, “just like the boy next door,” one of the flight attendants said.
After taking off from California, Lin prepared ice packs for his right knee and took a rest, the cabin service director said, adding that Lin was very well-mannered and humble.
Lin will attend a news conference today at 2pm in Taipei’s Xinyi District (信義) and will then fly to China for a basketball camp.
Due to time restraints, Lin was unlikely to be able to visit the ancestral home of his father’s relatives in Changhua County as planned. Many fans there expressed disappointment and look forward to seeing him later this month, when he is scheduled to return to Taiwan.
He is scheduled to return to Taiwan to host a similar camp for a group of 120 young players from Aug. 27 to Aug. 30.
